Top tip for virtual interviews

THIS WEEk's TOP Question (3) (1).png

As we continue to work remotely, it is no surprise that this question came up so often in our webinars last week, and not only in the interviewing webinar. Interviews will stay virtual for the foreseeable future.

It is a difficult question to answer as there are many tips to share, from body language to lighting for example but if I had to give one piece of advice only it would be to check that the technology involved in a virtual interview is set up and works properly.

It would be very frustrating to have prepared so well for an interview and on the day be incapable of showing how good you are because you are distracted by technology glitches …. Sounds rather basic but you would be surprised to hear how many people get caught out!

So, first of all, make sure that the device you are about to use has a webcam and that the audio works and headphones too if you use them; you may need a separate camera or you may need to ensure that you can remove without damage the sticky note you had put on the camera :)

Check which software the employer will be using and ensure that it is downloaded on your device well in advance of your interview. Test it at least the day before (you may even practice features like screen sharing). It is good to know that most teleconferencing software providers offer solutions to accommodate people with disability; if needed do ask early to ensure all is in place on time.

Then check the Internet connection in the room/area where you will sit (or stand) for the interview. Ask others in your house to not stream at the time of the interview!

Finally, ensure to charge your device during the interview! And that your mobile has a full battery too just in case you need to use it for calculations or research.

…. And relax …. Remember that if you have an interview, it is because you have impressed the hiring manager with your application and your CV.

If you want more support to prepare for interviews, or you know somebody who would benefit from our advice, we run webinars every week, at different times of the day (and in the evening) to help as many people as possible.
